Reliability is a data problem hiding in an engineering job

Sixty-year-old reliability workflows collapse the moment you treat them as a dataset. Here's what I see when I squint at a FMECA from the data side.

Draft placeholder — replace with your own writing.

Reliability engineers spend most of their time moving numbers between spreadsheets. The numbers are good. The moving is the problem. Everything downstream — FMECA, growth models, contractual deliverables — is a function of how clean the upstream part library is. Fix the library, and you fix the analysis. Fix the analysis, and you fix the schedule.

Three things I'd change tomorrow

  1. Treat the part library like a database, not a tab.
  2. Version every change to stress factors like you'd version code.
  3. Kill the copy-paste pipeline between CAD and reliability tools.
